Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My eighth grade students come from a low social-economic background, and yet they still manage to come to class eager to learn every day. They are highly motivated and love using technology in the classroom. They understand the importance of a good education and the role technology plays in their education. Our school is a Title I school and all of our students receive free lunch.

My students are enthusiastic learners!

They work hard and always put their best effort forward. And as such, I am always looking for the best ways to capture their attention and provide the best lessons that I can.

My Project

Reading is fundamental and yet some of my students are struggling to read and lack the motivation. When a student knows that he/she is not reading at grade level, self-esteem suffers as well. Many don't want to read because they feel embarrassed reading books below grade level, and they simply don't want other students to know that they are struggling. Graphic novels are a wonderful resource for these students. They not only look "cool" but they are also age-appropriate for middle school students. A struggling reader no longer needs to feel embarrassed about reading because they will have a "cool" book to read at their proper reading level. Not only will graphic novels motivate them to read but they will help struggling readers become successful and hopefully lifelong readers and learners.
