My students come from a low income area. Our school has a free breakfast and lunch program for all students. We live in a rural area where there extra curricular activities are limited. The school playground is basically the only place they can go and have fun. We have a good public library and am surprised at how many of my children do not take advantage of the service provided by our community.
A lot of my students come from families where English is a second language.
The area has a lot of manual labor jobs and it is hard for families to make ends meet. My students are fast paced and keeping their attention is not an easy thing.
My Project
Getting students to read seems nearly impossible. However, there is a trend going on with graphic novels. My students seem to devour them. I feel that if I have the books that students want and I can get more books into their hands than they will find the joy that others have when reading.
Also they will become readers and that will in turn will make them great students who will succeed.
When reading students need to be able to visualize what they are reading, graphic novels will start them on their journey into using the strategy visualization. When students can visual their comprehension increases.
