This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 7th grade students are open-minded and passionate for social justice. Our school does not have a formal library, and I have been working on building up our own classroom library. My students have expressed a mature awareness that many of our books are written at the Z+ level (that is, for high school reading level and beyond). As an English teacher, my most important job is to help unlock the world of literacy, and that is hard to do when the books I have to offer are frustratingly difficult or thematically beneath their interest. Based on student-request, we would like to fill our shelves with books with 7th-grade-relevant topics captured in a variety of text complexities so that all students have access to compelling stories.

With thoughtful book choices at their disposal, paired with their personal readiness to grow their reading and writing​ skills this year, these kids will be unstoppable and totally ready for high school.

My Project

Graphic novels are what my students would like to see more of in our in class library. Graphic novels are incredibly engaging, especially for students reluctant to read. They provide extra support the kids need to help them get through and finish a text.

In my Title I school, students who are emerging multilingual learners, as well as students with other learning challenges feel successful and supported with graphic novels, which opens up opportunity for building more literacy skills.

Students love reading graphic novels and need more access to these types of novels while learning in the classroom. This project will be the first step toward building a collection of graphic novels for my students to enjoy.
