My Project

I teach in a school that is culturally and linguistically diverse. My 2nd graders are kind and inquisitive little human beings who thrive on opportunities to move and express their creativity, emotions, and energy. We are often singing, dancing, and making art as well as working on the core subjects of reading/language arts and math. There is a lot of joy in my classroom!

The spark behind this project came about one day when a boy in my class showed me his copy of The Dragon Kingdom of Wrenly: The Coldfire Curse.

"Ms. Long, you HAVE to read this, it's so good!" he enthused, and even wanted me to take his book home to read. Suffice it to say, I read it shortly afterwards, and well, I was hooked!

I would like to add graphic novels to my classroom library because they can help develop my students' literacy skills, including reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking. Also, with their strong visuals, action sequences, and humor, they help to engage reluctant readers who struggle with traditional forms of literature. Many students who find books to be boring or difficult can find graphic novels to be much more accessible.
