My Students

"Nothing is impossible, even the word itself says, "I'm Possible!" This quote hangs in our classroom, and over the years, it has become our motto. My students know that I will never give up on them, so they aren't allowed to give up on themselves.

Students in my classroom are those who have not been successful in the traditional classroom setting.

They learn best with hands-on skills and real-world relevance. Students come to class ready to be immersed in learning for their life after high school, not just for a grade. My students haven't always "gotten" school.

Somewhere along the way, they lost their passion for learning. It is my goal to try to rejuvenate that joy and love. My students work in a competency-based program where they are no longer focused on credits. Instead, they show true proficiency in sixty areas related to high school subjects such as biology, personal finance, and literature. Projects are all hands-on and often include "real world" relevance with field trips or guest speakers. Not all students learn the same, and this program is designed for those students.

My Project

When you are a struggling reader in elementary school, what happens? You get to go to a special class and work one-on-one with a teacher who specializes in improving students reading ability. When a struggling reader is in high school (or even middle school!), what happens? They are told to work harder. That they are lazy. That they should have learned this by now.

Why do we tell older kids that they aren't worth the effort of our school systems to help them improve their reading?

My classroom is aiming to change this one student at a time. I want students who are struggling readers to know that it's okay to be a "bad" reader still in high school. That everything takes time and practice. Graphic novels are the best way to get students that practice. With the shorter text and graphics, they really help pull in students who are struggling. Help me to show my high schoolers that reading is a lifelong mission, not something that you have to be accomplished by the age of 10.
