Reading a book can provide a great deal of enjoyment, but unfortunately in today's video game world, kids have not discovered that joy. My desire is open up my students' world through graphic novels.
Students in my classroom are part of a lower economic community.
Many students come from a nearby Native American reservation. Most of the students take advantage of the free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. Their families are struggling financially, and sometimes lack things such as books and supplies that their children need to succeed.
Additionally, my students are part of the special education program. They all have a learning disability which impacts their abilities in Reading, Writing, and Math. They are all completely capable of succeeding in school and going on to college one day, but they just need to be taught in a different way than their general education peers.
My Project
Teaching a child to read is one of the greatest gifts anyone can give. To a child with a reading disability, however, reading a book can be challenging. Add to that the distractions of today's technology world, and reading doesn't even crack the top ten.
My desire is to show my students that books can bring as much excitement as a movie by using visually appealing graphic novels. These novels will keep my students visually engaged as they read page after page.
Reading every day is an important step in increasing reading skills.
Having books that are fun and visually appealing for my students to read will encourage them to pick them up and actually read - instead of pretending while turning pages. Please help me make my class readers!
