Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This diverse, excited group of friends has come together with the primary goal of developing and strengthening their literacy skills. My students come from many diverse backgrounds and have a variety of different needs in reading and writing. With 25 diverse friends from various parts of the country and world, we have lots to share with each other.
One of my strongest values and beliefs is that literacy is a lifelong love that is kindled by giving readers the tools they need to successfully connect to their reading and writing.
I want them to develop such a passion for reading and writing that they identify as readers and writers. I teach them that with some hard work and determination, they will be successful and on their way to their ultimate goals and dreams.
One thing that we would like you to know is that fostering a love for literacy in my students is the greatest privilege. Literacy will change their lives.
My Project
My students have a variety of literacy needs. One thing I have noticed in the last few months is how much they enjoy reading graphic novels. My most reluctant readers are so immersed in reading graphic novels that they forget they are in class! I love to see their passion for reading grow through graphic novels. These particular books are not just your traditional comics; these graphic novels teach students the classics like The Odessey as well as about the Civil War or even the life of Anne Frank! These diverse titles help support the learning done in social studies and English class.
Graphic novels are a perfect way to support reluctant readers searching for an interesting text to read.
The commitment is minimal and readers finish a novel or text sooner which helps them feel successful and ready for more!
