My Project
One of my favorite parts of teaching English to high school students is connecting with them through discussions about books! Some of my students absolutely love books; they come to me looking for a specific book or come to me recommending that I read a specific book.
Others are reluctant readers who haven't read a book in its entirety in years; this semester, I have quite a few students who are in this category, but I'm realizing that many of them are drawn to graphic novels!
Right now I just have a few graphic novels, but I'd really love to lean into their curiosity and be able to offer more graphic novel options for them to choose from. The coolest thing about graphic novels is that they are both literature and art! Students love them because of the artistic portrayal of the story -- it helps them understand what they're reading more. I love graphic novels because they're encouraging my reluctant readers to actually read! In my classroom library, I have a lot of books, but one area I know I'm lacking in is this, so I'd love your assistance to help remedy this.
Each semester, my students complete an independent book project, when they read a book of their choice (usually chosen from my classroom library) and complete various activities to demonstrate their mastery of the standards. These books are sure to be popular choices for this project, especially with a group of students who are struggling to find books right now. Hopefully, they will encourage students to pick up additional books to read, even when they're not explicitly required to do so!
