Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
According to Bernice Cullinan, "The amount of free reading done outside of school has consistently been found to relate to growth in vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency, and general information" ("Independent Reading and School Achievement" (2000)).
My students are all English Language Learners and recent immigrants to the United States.
Many of my students have had significant gaps in their education; as a result, they have acute literacy needs in both their home languages and in English. Although I teach tenth grade English Language Arts, very few of my students are able to read at grade level.
My Project
I plan on using the graphic novels in this project to encourage my students to read independently. A few weeks ago in class, we read a graphic novel called In Real Life by Cory Doctorow. The students loved the graphic novel format; the images definitely supported their understanding of the text. I was thrilled when they asked me if I could find similar texts for them to read. I created this project to provide them with high interest texts for independent reading.
As the quote above shows, there is ample research to prove that independent reading increases vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension.
I believe donations to this project will help my students to grow as readers, and to build their reading fluency. By increasing their literacy skills, I know that my students will be able to boost their academic achievement.
