My Students

I am fortunate to teach an energetic 9th grade English class made up of creative learners, strong collaborators, and students who work to make a positive classroom environment. My students are diverse in their backgrounds, personalities, and interests, but come together to create a unique learning experience for themselves and myself.

My class is lucky enough to include students with distinctive learning backgrounds, extra-curricular interests, and students from more than seventeen different countries, all of whom bring so much to the classroom and make my job so special.

Having so many unique voices in the room creates organized chaos that inspires all types of learning and teaching opportunities.

I am currently in my fourth year in education, and each year my students give me 180 more reasons to continue to work harder, learn more strategies, and reflect on my practice. Although there are no boring days, every day with my students reminds me how much I love this job, and how lucky I truly am.

My Project

These novels will help me better teach my students important reading techniques, as well as keeping them engaged. Teaching students aged 14-16 often means that the novels are not as relatable, so the formatting of the novel is able to reach students who may never want to read in class or at home. Creating a class mentality of interest in reading, and an understanding of various writing styles and formats is a concept that can stay with students throughout their learning careers.

By using graphic novels, the material becomes more accessible and interesting, which keeps an engaged and exciting classroom in a generation that is not always enthused about reading.

Students are able to grasp different ideas, follow plot lines, and visualize the development of characters in a way that is not always possible, especially for students with varying levels of English language proficiency. Often times, getting students to feel comfortable and confident with one book can change their entire mentality and view on education. We will use these books to meet writing and reading standards, and fully immerse ourselves into the world that Laurie Halse Anderson creates in her Young Adult novels.
