Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I will be teaching 20, 5th graders in a K-5 Title I elementary school that serves about 600 students. 100% of these students received free and reduced-price lunch. Despite many of my students being below grade level, they come to school ready to face new challenges, move forward, and learn.

I strive to create a classroom environment with high expectations that is safe, consistent, engaging, and a place students can grow.

I work hard to make lessons relevant and meaningful to their lives and personal experiences to motivate my students to take ownership of their education. I would like the opportunity to provide this experience by ensuring my students have all the resources and supplies that will help them continue to grow and love learning.

My Project

Reading is essential to academic growth and provides students with a world of opportunities. Many of my students have not been in a classroom in over a year and faced challenges during remote learning. Helping students get excited about reading was difficult over a computer and even more challenging when many students didn't have access to books. I want to start off the year strong by fostering a love of reading.

The goal of this project is to get highly engaging graphic novels in the hands of my students, so they will be excited about reading from the start.

Many of my students are not reading on grade level, which can make it challenging to find books they want to read that are appropriate for their grade level. The graphic novels in this project allow even the most struggling, reluctant reader to find a book that they can read on their own and enjoy. The comics are visual, which support reading comprehension and will continue to grow my students as readers. Please help me fill my classroom with diverse graphic novels to engage all of my students!
