My third graders are full of life and ready to learn every day. One of my favorite questions to answer is, "Can I take this book home to read?"
We are a Title I school that is located in an urban area that serves families from many backgrounds and cultures.
The school serves a diverse population where over half of the students are bilingual. Nearly 60% of the students are Hispanic, 17% African-American, and 12% Caucasian. Additionally, 99% of our students qualify for the free and reduced-price lunch program. More than three-fourths of the student population resides in low-income apartment complexes, and many also live in section 8 housing.
Our staff works to fill not only educational needs, but social and emotional needs also. Our students are amazing and try each day to do their very best. Their spirit to learn and become successful inspires me every day!
My Project
My favorite part of being an educator is building lifelong readers! My classroom library includes many different genres, however we are lacking quality graphic novels.
Graphic novels engage readers and encourage them to try something different.
Many students build their love of reading starting with graphic novels and then learn to love all types of books! The books in this project will reach a variety of readers.
Graphic novels are a great way to reach struggling and reluctant readers. The ones we have fly off the shelves! Having books the students enjoy reading is key to growing them into lifelong readers!
