Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Graphic novels are books written in a comic book format. Karin Slaughter said "graphic novels are not traditional literature...images are a way of writing". Graphic novels get our kids excited about reading and there are pictures that go along with the text to help our struggling readers or those for whom English is their second language.

Our students LOVE book club!

They come in early to read and discuss stories. We talk about how the books are made, read them and then the students have an opportunity to come with their own idea and write their own story. We are asking for titles for the younger readers and for our older elementary students. These stories not only have silly characters like talking waffles but also are about history and science. Students can learn about real life trailblazers like John Lewis and Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Our club is beneficial to the students. I have had many parents over the years say that these books are what made their kiddos readers. They devour these books and I want them to be able to check out these stories and read them with their families.
