Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are capable high school learners in Southern California. We actively collaborate to ignite and explore curiosities with classroom tools to create the next generation of future-ready learners. Together we deepen our knowledge as we look within to build kindness, compassion, and empathy.

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all,” champions Helen Keller.

For high school students, their immediate surroundings create their scope of the world and what life has to offer. We expand our point of view through literature when we are without a means for travel. A significant number of students live in multi-family households. Additionally, a compelling number of students are classified as special populations. Communal access to literature expands student opportunities to think beyond themselves in the here and now no matter their circumstances.

Our school serves approximately 2,600 students. While class sizes increase, we are in need of additional materials to support student learning.

My Project

Upon completion of our most recent literature unit a plea for incorporating graphic novels was shared by several classes of students. I have to agree with them. Graphic novels have won the Pulitzer, the Newberry, and the National Book Award. These texts require and reinforce interpreting visual metaphors, decoding symbols, reading in an intentional order, and more.

"The next book we read, can it have pictures, please?"

My response is I will do my best to get you what you want. Students taking ownership of their learning by deciphering what they like and dislike is a major victory since 33% of students never read another book again after high school. At this moment, following the toughest year of education as seen yet, our students want to be engaged with the text. They want to read; moreover, they know HOW they want to read that information.
