Our small K-6 school is located in a low-income area. My scholars face many challenges both in and outside of the classroom, but they strive to give their best effort each day. We work on having a positive attitude, kind manners, and being a good school citizen. Books are our way to work on these attributes!
My scholars are zesty learners who love to dive into a good book!
"I went home and read 50 pages of my book," I heard a scholar recently exclaim. We read for 20-30 minutes each day in the classroom. We work to create a reading community by talking and writing about our books daily. We also use the magic of books to learn and guide us through this challenging life.
My Project
My students need to get their hands on a variety of graphic novels to grow their love of reading. These books draw readers in with their pictures and words. Students feel like they aren't reading as much, but really are! These types of books are seen as 'easy' but, have challenging vocabulary just like any other book. Unfortunately, my library doesn't have as many as we need. These kinds of books are always flying off the shelves because students can't get enough.
Graphic novels are one of the easiest ways to reach the reluctant reader!
I want to increase the amount of graphic novels in my classroom library so students just keep on reading!
