Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 6th grade in a low income school. My school is located in a predominantly Spanish speaking community. I have many student to whom English is a second language.
Despite the occasional language difficulties, my students love books.
Many of my students enjoy reading comic books because of the vivid pictures. They are able to make the connection between the picture and the text, thus making reading more enjoyable. They get excited when they have read something and they comprehend what is going on, for some this is a great accomplishment.
My Project
My students need book sets of graphic novels. Graphic novels are written and drawn like comic books, but still considered novels. My students enjoy the couple that we have, but I know that more students would venture out and try reading if I had more to offer. I believe getting these sets of novels will motivate my students to read. They have wonderful pictures and the story lines are intriguing. The sets of "Bone" Books and the "Hardy Boys" Series would be a wonderful addition. My students would be reading a great book and they feel as if it is a comic book.
The only expose to a library that some of my students have is my library and I would like them to have a variety to choose from.
I would like my students to have access to the new reading material that is out there. Reading is fun.
The Hardy Boys Series was popular back in its day. Now it is making a come back in the graphic novel format. Please help this generation enjoy that series and the new Bone series as much as you did when you were a kid.
