My Students

My students are resilient and determined. Many of them have challenges such as learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism, and mental health challenges. Several of my students have experienced trauma that affects their lives on a daily basis.

Despite challenges, my students continue to come to school each day and keep trying.

They often show kindness and compassion to those who are different from them.

My junior high is located in central Utah. We are in a small rural town that is rapidly growing. Fishing, hunting, biking, and playing video games are popular activities. Many of my students don’t read much outside of school but are working to discover their reading identities.

My Project

One of my major goals as a teacher is to get my students reading! Most of them have had negative experiences with reading and I want to turn it around. Many of my students develop the love of reading through graphic novels and high interest series. They can actually finish books and comprehend what they have just read. Many of my students got further behind during the pandemic and these books will help re-engage my students in reading.

These graphic novels and series books will allow my students to access great stories with the visual support of pictures or familiarity of characters.

Graphic novels not only help them raise their reading levels, but they also help with inference and visualizing skills. They are always requesting the latest graphic novels and I want to keep them engaged in reading. High interest, low reading level books help my students access age appropriate content while still being able to comprehend what they read. When they read books in a series, they are more confident in their reading since they are already familiar with characters and the authors plot and writing styles. These types of books help developing readers!
