This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being drawn into a comic book? Today's comic books (AKA graphic novels) still draw in reluctant readers (esp. boys), assist with vocabulary development, and even decrease behavior issues! Titles selected support state curriculum and social studies content.

I teach at an Intermediate school in Texas that serves grades 5-6.

I teach two 6th grade language arts classes. My students are English language learners and are economically disadvantaged. Many have never visited a library outside of the school library and have very few reading materials at home. They love reading graphic novels but our school has only a tiny selection in the school library. The few graphic novels I have in my own personal library are always the first to be picked up and read by students. My students need more high interest materials to keep them reading and focused in school. I'm convinced that graphic novels are a key element that will change attitudes towards reading and school in general.

My Project

Ever read required reading just to get through it? Imagine if Romeo and Juliet had been presented to you in a graphic novel? How about Tom Sawyer or even poetry? Graphic novels of today are not just action hero stories (although they're great, too!). The graphic novels I have selected are meant to supplement the curriculum, give visual support for vocabulary, and make students lifelong readers who read for pleasure as well as content. Using graphic novels, I will be able to read in small groups with my students are their reading level, expose students to a different genre of literature, use selections for independent reading, cooperative group activities and partner sharing.

This donation of graphic novels will be used immediately by my two large classes.

Since the materials are non-consumable, the books will be kept in my classroom library for years to come and will be enjoyed by many other future students. I will give various pre- and post-reading assessments that will measure reading fluency, comprehension as well as interest levels to determine how graphic novels made a difference.
