I teach at an Intermediate school in Texas that serves grades 5-6. I teach two 6th grade language arts classes. My students are English language learners and are economically disadvantaged. Many have never visited a library outside of the school library and have very few reading materials at home. They love reading graphic novels but our school has only a tiny selection in the school library. The few graphic novels I have in my own personal library are always the first to be picked up and read by students. My students need more high interest materials to keep them reading and focused in school. I'm convinced that graphic novels are a key element that will change attitudes towards reading and school in general.
