My Students

"I can't find anything that I want to read!" Even though we have many books in by classroom library, many of them are older and outdated. I would like to expand my classroom library to include more current books, especially graphic novels. I teach 21 fifth graders in a suburban setting. I also switch with another teacher for part of the day, so 45 students will benefit from this project. Our school has over 1,000 students, so it is difficult to fund all of the projects for each classroom.

By adding graphic novels to my independent classroom library, I hope to engage all of my readers.

Graphic novels get students excited and engaged in their independent reading. Student choice with independent reading has been proven to increase comprehension and create lifelong readers.

My Project

Research shows that the best way for students to become lifelong readers is to read, read, read! To do this, they need access to high quality and high interest books. Graphic novels allow students to read above their independent reading level so they can engage with more challenging text.

My students have been begging for more time to read and graphic novels are their favorites!

With this project, I can make sure all students have access to these books. We are also trying a new unit in writing this year where students will be writing their own graphic novels, so these books will serve as mentor texts, too!
