Graphic Novel, Graphic Life

My students need graphic novels in our classroom. As a first-year teacher, I would like to build my classroom library with books that will be exciting and support even my lowest level reader.

My Students

I am a first-year teacher working with about 75 8th graders. We are from a rural area and the majority of my students come from low-income families. Unfortunately, simple joys, like curling up to read a good book, are foreign to my students. They haven't experienced chasing a wild animal through the desert of Africa, or hid in a bunker from the Germans. They haven't gotten to witness the world at Hogwarts School or saved the owls from construction, and I want them to have that. Reading was always my escape from reality, and as a teacher, I hope to give my students the gift of reading. It is a way to live 1,000 lifetimes in the span of our one and experience cultures and time-periods that we will never get to experience in real-life.

Some of my students need this escape into a different reality from their own and with an average reading level of 4th grade, I am in need of books that will help get my non-readers excited for reading.

My Project

Reading is an escape. There is nothing better than taking a break from the reality that you cannot control and diving into a book that has a world of its own. There is a book for every situation life throws at you, where you can learn from the experiences each character overcomes. Somehow you can identify with a character in such a way that you suddenly don't feel so alone in life, even if the character is fictional.

There is no better feeling than turning that final page, closing your eyes, and breathing a sigh of relief.

I want my students to know this feeling. Books fill up your heart and mind unlike anything else. I want my students to appreciate books and their unique lessons. I primarily teach students that read well below 8th grade level. Their low levels are a combination of poor reading comprehension skills, poor vocabulary skills, and an overall lack of interest in reading due to years of it being deemed "uncool." Because they lack the basic reading comprehension skills needed to understand the story, reading isn't as enjoyable as it should be.

I am in need of graphic novels for my classroom. I am a first-year teacher and lack a lot of the resources that my experienced coworkers have in their classrooms. The books I do have are great for my more mature readers, but the addition of graphic novels would help me reach ALL of my students. Graphic novels help with comprehension and give students the confidence to complete an interesting book that could be daunting in chapter-book form. They make reading more enjoyable and open the door for that student who has a history of hating to read, and makes him want to read again and again.
