My Project

This project is for my amazing students! I work with a small groups of gifted students who are gifted in reading and math and achieve above level. Our school is in a high poverty zone with students coming from low socioeconomic status homes. My classroom is a place for my students to have access to books, lessons, and special projects. My students crave meaningful academic experiences with books!

Books are mirrors, windows, and doors for readers: They help readers see new things and travels new places, but also help readers reflect on their own lives.

This is why graphic novels and great books should be part of every classroom. My goal is to have my students engage in books that use graphic elements and comics to tell the story. Each of these carefully selected books tells a story about a student who faces challenges but achieves amazing things! Students may not have ever experienced a graphic novel, but these books will capture the hearts of my students and inspire them to continue reading, writing, and exploring the world around them.

The books that were selected for this project are high interest. One of the books, "El Deafo" is a memoir about an author, CeCe Bell who loses her hearing and has to learn to navigate deafness. Another book, "Swim Team" is about a young girl who takes a risk and tries a new sport. "All's Faire" is about a family who has a passion for historic festivals. Also included are 2 series, "I Survived" and "Act" which will give students an opportunity to keep on reading once we finish our books together.

Please help me fund this project so that I can add beautiful words to my classroom library and read amazing diverse books with my students.
