My Project

My 8th graders at our school are growing more fond of reading the more they see themselves reflected in stories about love, loss, coping, adventuring, and overcoming. They are each on a journey of figuring out who they are, what they need, and where they’re headed. Our classroom library plays a crucial role not only in developing their literacy and shaping their critical thinking skills, but also in providing empathy, coping mechanisms, self-discovery, and broadened perspectives.

As our teens grapple with issues and adversity in their own lives, they need entry points to a depth of thinking found in time spent with a beloved book.

Graphic novels are especially beneficial for reluctant readers because they make complex subjects more accessible. I’ve seen gradual and occasionally sudden changes in my students who have found a connection with a book that helps them tune out distractions and tune in to their imagination. I’m seeking more of the kinds of books that have ignited this spark in those who might otherwise have never known -- or had forgotten -- that they love to read.

The more my students read, the more experience they will have with the skills of comprehension and analysis needed in high school and beyond.
