Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine a child who recently switched to the gifted class from the bilingual class. Imagine he doesn't like reading and resists all attempts to put books in his hand. Imagine, then, the teacher's surprise to see this child return from the library with not one but three slim volumes that he eagerly dives into. I'm speaking of books from the Graphic History comic book series. Several times in my classroom, I've observed reluctant non-readers devouring these appealing tomes. The problem is, our school library only stocks a few volumes of this series, and those only in Spanish. Therefore, I am in search of these magical books that will help transform the most unenthusiastic of readers.
I believe both reading and history can bring meaning to lives. Convincing children of this can be another matter, however. They often ignore the many nonfiction books I gather to support our social studies units. On the other hand, these Graphic History books present compelling true-to-life stories in an easy, relatable way. From what I've seen, kids can't wait to pick these up. Even though I teach gifted-and-talented fifth graders, there is a huge range of abilities and interests in my classroom. For starters, many of my students are native Spanish speakers. Building vocabulary is a daily challenge for us, and if kids are reading academic books for fun, they will surely gain word knowledge along the way.
My hope is that ALL my children get hooked into America's fascinating history tales while also looking forward to reading after school and on the weekends. Graphic novels are the future of children's literature, and I hope to do the best for my kids as soon as possible!
