My Students

Our public school opened four years ago. While we have a new building, we are missing many of the things a school that has been open for a long time has. We are also working to build community with our families who are often untrusting of the public school system.

Our students come from all over San Francisco and are a very diverse group of kids.

The majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and many live in public housing. Many of our students struggle with reading, and this impacts them in all of their classes.

My Project

My students love the sewing machine we have in the Makerspace. Many students know how to use it but prefer to hand sew. Our school is one to one with Chromebooks so my students are also creating cool things on the computer. This machine will bring these two elements together.

I want to take their sewing projects to the next level by introducing graphic design into them.

My students will be able to use this machine to create real items from their digital projects. It will help them create items on the sewing machine that are more personal.

I would also like to use this machine for a class project when the students write personal narratives. It will encourage students to complete the writing project so that they can personalize an item that represents them.
