I am a full-time K-5 special education teacher at a rural school. My school has approximately 200 students, and the number of students I teach varies from year to year. Currently I have 8 students in my classroom throughout the day that have learning disabilities and are behind their same age peers. These students benefit from small group or one-on-one instruction to learn. I provide instruction and support for students in all academic areas: math, reading, writing, spelling, science and social studies.
My goal is to provide support and instruction for my students to be successful in the general education classroom.
Many of the students that I teach are diagnosed with ADHD and need a different setting to gain focus on learning the curriculum. Students who come to me are behind their same-aged peers and need a learning environment that fosters independent work skills and encourages critical thinking.
My students love to learn and work individually with teachers and peers.
These books will enrich my classroom library that I have tried to create for my students. I am always looking for new books and new ways to reach students to create a love for reading. The majority of my students are behind their same aged peers in reading and don't necessarily love reading the same types of books their peers are interested in. I talk with my students and find their interests and then look for books that are lower leveled readers, but high interest.
Graphic books will provide another type of reading experience for my students and encourage a love for reading.
My students love reading and looking at new books during their independent reading times. I would like to use these books as a learning tool to teach skills of describing a story with details from the book, and my students rely on pictures to help them with this skill. Books with lots of pictures and small sentences will be a great addition to my classroom library and I know my students will love these books for their independent reading.
