Grants for Great Ideas: Blossoming in the Media Center

Help me give my students 5 garden building kits to learn about flower parts!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Pitchford's classroom raised $168

My Project

Science concepts can be tough for young minds to understand. My students will benefit greatly from being able to interact with flower parts with these kits. Students will collaborate and interact with one another while they assemble flowers in small groups. The gardening kits are bright, colorful, and engaging, and students will have a blast creating their own flowers.

Often, students need a visual and hands-on method for learning.

Students will not expect to find this fun activity in the library that will allow them to make a strong connection between Media resource and their science class!

The goal of the project is to teach students through inquiry. Students will take ownership of their learning while using their imaginations to assemble beautiful flowers. This will also give students a new appreciation for the library!

I plan on using these kits throughout the school year.

Students will be given a pre-assessment to determine their background knowledge. The concept of flowers and their parts will be introduced through a read-aloud story. Students will then begin to engage and create the flowers with the kits. As I work with students in their groups, we will discuss their creations and the names of each part of the flowers. Students will enjoy sharing their creations and challenging each other to name the parts of their flowers.

This project is aligned with the standard: SC.1.L.14.2:

Identify the major parts of plants, including stem, roots, leaves, and flowers.

Kindergarten students will be prepared for 1st grade science while 2nd graders will receive an important refresher!

I will know that students have successfully learned the parts of a flower by providing a pre-assessment prior to the introduction. I expect that a minimum of 80% of my students will accurately be able to label the parts of a flower.
