Grants 4 Great Ideas: Launching Towards Sixth Grade Math!

Help me give my students the boost to confidently launch towards sixth grade when they collaborate in small groups using hands-on math activities about testable fifth grade standards such as numbers and operations, algebraic thinking, measurement, and geometry.

My Project

Fifth grade is an especially important and challenging year for our students, especially those with various exceptionalities because the rigor and student expectations increase as we prepare them for the transition to the sixth grade middle school curriculum. Fifth grade is also the most tested grade level in elementary school with assessments in math, science, ELA (reading), and ELA (writing). We work all year to help students master this content, and to differentiate instruction in order to reach our diverse group of learners. We prepare them to perform their best on the test, but we also look to provide a strong foundation that will help them transition easily into sixth grade. During our time together in fifth grade, we hope to spark an interest in math and science that may lead students to choose careers in STEM fields.

If funded, my students will use the following standards-based hands-on math learning folder games during small group instruction to deepen understanding, increase mathematical fluency and comprehension, develop critical thinking skills, work collaboratively, and build confidence in their abilities.

The wobble stools will help my students with ADD/ADHD burn off extra energy which will greatly help them focus on learning.

These materials will be used throughout the year in student-led collaborative small groups, teacher-directed small group instruction, enrichment for early finishers, and for ongoing review of important testable concepts. I will use our baseline and end-of-year benchmark assessments to measure growth in mathematical understanding. My goal is that at least 70% of participating students will improve their score from the F.A.S.T. Math Progress Monitoring 1 assessment.
