Grants 4 Great Ideas: Fun and Flexible Small Groups!

Help me give my students flexible seating options and snacks during small group instruction.

My Project

I would love to be able to offer flexible seating options and snacks when needed for my students. I am a current ESE teacher for 5th and 6th graders and my students are in desperate need of seating that stimulates their sense of touch and fosters a relaxed atmosphere. Students with disabilities will especially benefit from this type of seating because it allows them to move freely while focusing on the task at hand.

It also provides students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them.

This project is ongoing and will benefit my small groups all year long. The measurable outcome for my 5th and 6th grade students will be comparing their ELA FAST scores from PM2 to PM3. During small groups, flexible seating will allow students to process standards and information more easily. Some of the many standards that will be addressed: LAFS.5.RL.1.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. LAFS.5.RL.4.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the high end of the grades 4–5 text complexity band independently and proficiently. LAFS.6.RL.2.6 Explain how an author develops the point of view of the narrator or speaker in a text. LAFS.6.RL.4.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6–8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
