Grants 4 Great Ideas: Book Buddy Bags

My Project

The COVID19 Pandemic has left an impact on everyone. Perhaps the biggest impact has been on our youth. As a first grade teacher, I have observed how important the school experience is for our students. School provides students with academic instruction, daily structure, and social opportunities. Many first-grade students did not have a preschool experience due to the COVID19 Pandemic. As a result, one third of my current students are reading below grade level expectation.

The first-grade standard states that students read grade level texts with accuracy, automaticity, and appropriate prosody or expression ( ELA.1.F.1.4).

In order to help my students read on grade level, I would like to provide a Book Buddy Bag for each of my students. Each bag will consist of 3 books on their individual reading level and comprehension questions. Students will take home a different bag each week. The Book Buddy Bags will foster daily reading practice at home.

Book Buddy Bags will be ongoing during the second semester. Monthly running records will be used to monitor each student’s reading level. The monthly running records will serve as a pre and posttest. Families can track their child’s reading level growth on their individual graph. My goal is for every student to improve by one reading level. This achievement should be reached by the end of the 4th 9 weeks.

“Neuroscience research shows that paper-based content is better connected to memory in our brains” (Bangor University, 2022). As technology becomes more prevalent in our society, it is important for students to have the opportunity to engage with books. The Book Buddy Bags will foster confidence, conversation, and active engagement with families. Thank you for considering this valuable opportunity that can create lifelong readers.
