I am a first year Kindergarten teacher in a brand new school in Chicago's West Inglewood neighborhood. The activity I am proposing will be the culmination of an upcoming unit about nutrition. I want to capture my students' energetic imaginations by creating a grocery store in our dramatic play center. This project will not only help my 24 students learn about nutritious choices they can make while shopping; but also about counting and exchanging money, two skills we have been practicing for the past few weeks. Unfortunately, our math series did not provide play money with its manipulative kit, and the only coins available are ones I buy at the bank. Throughout the year, I have noticed that my students learn best with hands-on experience. One of their favorite activities was estimating how many seeds we would find in our Halloween pumpkin, which we carved and placed in the water table for an oozing sensory experience. I believe the upcoming nutrition unit to be extremely important for my students, whose idea of a good breakfast includes pop and Flamin' Hot Cheetos. I know that having a class grocery store, complete with cash register, play money, dramatic play word cards, and play food will be the perfect culminating activity for this exciting unit!
