Grams to Dreams: Digital Balances for Hands-On Discovery
Help me give my students these Bonvoisin Laboratory scales with the calibration weights and the plug-in option so we can have accurate measurements without worrying about batteries.
These digital scales will allow my 8th-grade physical science and 11th-grade chemistry students to experience real-world learning. This past year, our school only had about 6 functioning triple-beam balances that needed to be shared between 3 classrooms. Several times during labs, some student groups could start right away, while other groups had to wait until another group finished. These scales would alleviate that bottleneck and allow all students to get started right away.
Not only that, but students should have the opportunity to work with real electronics and get accurate and precise measurements for their experiments.
Whether it's weighing the mass of their egg drop device or measuring specific quantities of chemicals for a solution, these are a much-needed addition.
The goal for our classroom is to have nine digital scales. We were just funded two (thank you!), and now we are hoping for seven more, which would make our classroom a high-functioning place for scientific investigations.
