Greetings! I am a third grade teacher at Gallberry Farm Elementary in Hope Mills, NC. We are a Title I school, with 57% of our "Gators" receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school is constantly seeking ways to better meet the needs of our students. Children today need more stimulation to remain interested and motivated. They need to develop the skills to work with others so they will be able to enter the work force as team players. To accomplish both of these goals, our school received basic training in Dr. Spencer Kagan's Cooperative Learning Structures. Dr. Kagan has been developing "structures" to guide student interaction since 1968. These research-based approaches to teaching and learning have not only improved cooperation, but also academic achievement, ethnic relations, self-esteem, classroom climate, and character virtues. As a lead teacher and lead mentor for beginning teachers, I have used these strategies not only in my classroom, but also to enhance the professional development that I offer my colleagues. Now I am ready to venture "beyond the basics"! I am requesting resources to deepen my knowledge of cooperative learning and extend the basic strategies I've learned to all areas of my teaching, including classbuilding, team building, mathematics, reading, and writing. Dr. Kagan offers six books addressing these topics, as well as the spinners used to implement the activities and posters to help my students remember the particulars of the structures we use. These materials will be used in my classroom, but will be shared with other teachers, allowing more of our nearly 1,000 students access. That's a lot of Gators! Children today need engaging activities. They need to be taught to effectively communicate and produce quality work in a variety of group settings. Dr. Kagan's materials provide fun-filled, research-based approaches to meet the children's needs. Please help me bring these learning opportunities to my students!
