Help me give my students hands-on learning about Graffiti, the 4th element in our deep-dive study of Hip Hop music and culture. Non toxic spray paint will allow students to create their tag on large paper to share
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
5th graders are completing a deep-dive study of 4 main elements of Hip Hop Music and Culture - DJing, Breakdancing, MCing, and Graffiti. We are able to really get hands-on experience in the first three areas, watching up-close video of DJs performing their craft and using a turntable up close and personal, trying our hand at break dancing, and hearing from the great MCs before performing our own raps, but Graffiti is the one big missing element. We can study graffiti, look at art, hear from graffiti artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and use digital media to create our own designs, but none of that really gives the hands-on feel and experience of using spray paint.
These non-toxic, water-based spray paints with give my students all the experience of spray painting using safe materials in a positive, guided environment.
We will use large, long sheets of butcher paper hung up on walls outside and laid on the sidewalk to provide the canvas for our artwork to later display inside the school.
