My Students
This year, my classroom is comprised of twenty second graders. I have students of a wide range of abilities - 504 students, EL children, SPED students, and EIT serviced children. They come from many different cultures and speak many different languages - Arabic, Polish, Mandarin, Tamil, Urdu, Portuguese, and Spanish to name a few.
They are a fantastic group to work with and I find myself working harder than ever to meet their thirst for learning.
One strength in my room this year is that my students love to read. They are adept decoders and my daily mini lessons focus mostly on building higher level comprehension skills and vocabulary acquisition.
To this end, I have put together a wide variety of books for them to choose from each week when they book shop and I am constantly looking for more exciting materials for them to use during independent time. The more interesting and fresh the materials are, the longer I can keep them focused on independent work and practice building meaning of text.
My Project
The Versatiles package that I am hoping to get for my students will provide them with a self directed, hands on way to practice their comprehension skills while building phonics, fluency, and vocabulary. They will use the non-consumable workbooks and tile packages to complete colorful and engaging activities that they then self-correct to learn more about second grade science and social studies curriculum and how to build meaning when decoding. The package will be used this year and for years to come as one way the children in my second grade can practice building meaning independently and at their own pace.
