My Students
I am 'the contact' teacher in the area that has the 'hangout' class for those students who may be dropped off early or otherwise, find themselves in a quiet and dark school at 6:00 am in the morning. Too many kids do not have a point of attachment to the school and wander.
Those students who feel alone and without company in the early mornings gravitate to those teachers who may use the quiet and calm hours to prep.
I like to offer a wicker basket of breakfast bars and CostCo type treats for any student, including those on my rolls, to stop by and grab . . .getting a chance to interact with a teacher, and starting their day off right.
My Project
Despite the good efforts our cafeteria staff and administration do to prep students for the day, there are numerous students in my classes, in Special Ed., and in our halls that wander alone, have no location to call a 'port in the storm' and nowhere to grab a snack before school starts. My room is a haven . . . a port where they can get a granola bar, some words of encouragement, and in some cases, the breakfast they missed as they fall through the cracks.
The students I benefit go through the entire day, and not just my Junior English classes, with a better attitude, and in some cases, the bare nutrition they need to focus on that first period of the day.
