My students need a GPS receiver to create maps of the plants and animals in our neighborhood.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from over 25 countries and speak nearly as many languages. They are all English Language Learners (ELLs) who have come to the United States seeking new opportunities. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential.
In addition to the monumental task of learning a new language, they must do so while meeting the same high school requirements as native English speakers.
They are an amazing group, but our district cannot always give us the resources to match our ambitions. Science and engineering are democratizing disciplines, because they engage students of all types - writers, mathematicians, builders, artists. When these students get together to collaborate on a problem, the sky is the limit.
My Project
There is no better way to get kids excited to learn science than to give them problems to solve that are hands-on, personal, and open-ended. Discovering and documenting the biodiversity of our concrete jungle is just such a problem. We will use this GPS receiver to record and map coordinates of the local flora and fauna we find in our neighborhood and beyond.
From the GPS, map points can be put into a program like Google Earth - a powerful tool for conservation biologists to keep track of and understand endangered species. While we won't be chasing jaguars in New York City, we do want to practice using these tools to conduct real research.
I want my students to publish their own field guide, complete with maps, to the biological resources right here in their own neighborhood! Along the way we will be using English and their native languages to get it done.
My hope is that this project can develop skills that are vital for work in college and careers, and can peak their interest to explore more opportunities in science, engineering, math, and technology.
Please help me teach my students about their new home while they have fun with science. Your act of kindness and generosity will have a long lasting impact on our students.
