Oasis Middle School is a charter school in Southwest Florida. Our kids are amazing! Our class size averages 300 students per grade level with 150- 160 in each 7th grade Civics class. Our students are anxious to learn about how history, civics, and current world events impact their every day lives.
We also have about 25-30 6th -8th grade students participate in YIG (Youth In Government) which is an after school club. YIG is a hands-on civics education club that models our state legislature. Students involved in the club write bills based on their interests and community problems they identify, and then travel to our Junior Youth In Government Assembly to debate them with students from all across the state.
From classroom debates to political simulations, we need a world of knowledge at our finger tips. And you can provide our Civics class and our Youth In Government club with the technology that will give us just that. As we dive into issues that concern our democracy, we will fine tune our public speaking skills, our ability to work in teams and learn how to solve real world problems. We need computers to aid in our research, gather statistics, collect data and to explore differ sides of current issues.
In Their Own Words
A class set of chrome books would enhance our learning environment in Civics by making it a lot easier to study current events, do research, and prepare for classroom activities such as class debates. And when it comes to studying for our class we can easily access games on Icivics (or somewhere else) to help us understand the content of our classes.
Leadership is the whole purpose of Civics and YIG (Youth In Government). The goal is to cultivate active citizens that will positively impact our country and the world. They want to learn about how our government works with the hope that they can play an active role and solving real world problems that impact everyone.
We don't have the budget in our school system to support our technology needs. Although students in the district schools have access to personal Chromebooks, because we are a charter school, the district has not extended the funds that would provide chromebooks of our students. But where there is a will there is a way; that's why we are asking for help from donorschoose.org.
