Gotta Pass the Test, Or No Diploma!

My students need a classroom set of pattern blocks and algebra tiles, as well as a matching overhead set of algebra tiles and an algebra and pre-algebra worksheet books.

I am the only high school math teacher at a small rural school. I teach all the students grade 9 through 12 and all levels of math from Algebra I through AP Statistics and Trigonometry.

Starting with this year's freshmen, all students in Oklahoma must pass the Algebra I EOI (End of Instruction test) in order to graduate high school. If they do not pass the test they will not move onto another math subject, but will rather be retaught algebra until they pass the test. Many of my students are young freshman and have difficulty grasping the abstract concepts in Algebra.

If we have to offer additional sections of Algebra I more than one period a day we will lose our upper level math courses. I don't want to do that but I also don't want my students lost and failing the EOI either. I feel that by using more manipulatives and visual aids my students will better grasp the concepts which will result in higher test scores and fewer students needing remediation.

Unfortunately there's no room in the school budget for the manipulatives my students need to be successful. That's where you can make a difference. I am asking for a classroom set of Algebra tiles, and an overhead set for the teacher to use to illustrate problems, so that students can learn to use the tiles to manually solve a problem while learning and developing the underlying concepts, and a classroom set of pattern blocks. I am also asking for two books of worksheets, one Algebra and one prealgebra (because some of the students come to me lacking the prealgebra skills needed to be successful in algebra). With your help I will have a better chance at getting my students to pass Algebra I and the attached EOI the first time around.
