Gotta Listen- Teaching Through Read Alouds

My students need more read alouds to teach them different social skills through engaging stories.

My Students

Some of the best childhood memories come from being read to!

My students are a group of diverse, inner city 8 year olds.

Our school is 98% free and reduced lunch; which means that 98% of our students live in poverty. Many of my students are either homeless, move around a lot, or live with other relatives (ie. grandma, aunts/uncles, etc). They are students who haven't had the easiest life, but have some awesome dance moves, amazing stories, and a want/need to be loved. Many of them are below grade level, functioning at least one grade level below academically and at least two grade levels below socially.

My Project

I am a huge supporter of integrating reading into all subject areas. Some of my favorite memories come from my mom and dad reading to me every night. I had hundreds of books and could list my favorites from a young age. Many of my students don't get read to at home and can't read to themselves. Many, don't have books at their house to read. Also, since they are behind socially, they need to be taught how to be empathetic, what sympathetic means, how to greet someone, and how to share with someone. These books will allow the students to not only be read to, but to learn social skills and other academic subjects through an engaging story.

These donations will improve my classroom by enriching the students minds through a variety of interesting and relatable stories.

It will give them the ability to say "(insert book title) is my favorite book!" and it gives them an opportunity to have a real life situation to talk about a variety of social skills.
