My Students

We gotta have our Pops! Nope, I'm not talking about the breakfast cereal. I'm talking about the highly engaging websites Brain Pop Jr. and Reading A-Z.com which will leave my students hungry for learning.

I teach a co-teaching first grade class in a high poverty school, which means there is a special education teacher in the room and many of our students have special needs or learning disabilities like ADHD.

Most people know children with Attention Deficit Disorder have trouble focusing, but that's not the whole story. Children with ADHD also have the ability to hyper-focus on things they find really interesting. It's my job to find a way to catch their attention. I feed my students a free breakfast and free lunch everyday, but I also feed their minds in the most engaging way possible. Websites like Brain Pop Jr. and Reading A-Z offer high quality, high interest content to supplement our reading, social studies, and science curriculum.

My Project

The Reading A to Z website provides leveled reading books that can be read online, projected on a large screen, or printed for students to take home. They are perfect for a wide range of readers and cover timely subject matter such as the presidential election, the Olympics, and September 11th. Using the Reading A to Z website is an engaging way to add more non-fiction texts to my curriculum and will help me meet the new Common Core Learning Standards. Brain Pop Jr. is a fun website that streams high interest video clips about almost every subject imaginable. If I'm teaching about Johnny Appleseed, I'll be able to project an engaging video short about his life at the beginning of my lesson. Brain Pop also offers interactive online quizzes after each clip.

I wasn't sure if these websites would benefit my students, so I signed up for free trial subscriptions to both and my students went bananas over them!

I'm convinced both sites will enhance my curriculum. But more than that, using these websites is one way I can make learning fun and keep some of my most easily distracted students engaged.
