Gothic Graphic (Novel) Classics

My Students

Senior year can be difficult: students are bombarded with multiple decisions about colleges, scholarships, extra curricular activities, and then there is the dreaded illness of senior-itis.

This year, I have a class of students in regular English 12 and a class of College Placement (CP) English 12 Honors. While they are two unique groups of learners, they share similar qualities. They are bright and curious learners who help each other find thoughtful meaning within British Literature.

My Project

In my classroom, I strive to use materials that are of high interest to students. With my classes, I feel that it is important for students to be exposed to all forms of literature: films, TV programs, podcasts, YouTube videos, traditional literature... Each is unique and can be "read" by students.

I have always loved graphic novels and comics books and feel that graphic novels are a way to visually represent knowledge to students.

The graphic novels I have selected: Dracula, Frankenstein, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are staples of any teacher of British Literature. I believe that these titles will keep my students engaged and interested in material that tends to be dry and difficult to understand. Graphic novels present to students what is essential for them to understand. These titles will increase their comprehension and help to hone their analytical skills. Graphic novels make their time reading what was once a difficult text more enjoyable.
