Gotham Writers' Workshop in the Making

My project needs literacy materials for a pre-kindergarten writing workshop. Requested items include backpack sets, blank books, manuscript letter cards, a Big Red Barn and a periscope.

Following the success of Future Pulitzer Prize Winners, Gotham Writers' Workshop is pleased to introduce Fiction Gallery, an anthology of exceptional short stories by young authors. Every story will hold the reader spellbound from first to last page, while also exemplifying the very best in literary fiction. The eighteen young authors are all pre-k students at C.S. 102 in the Bronx. The children are striving to become acclaimed contemporary writers. We need your help though in supplying a few materials to inspire us. I am their teacher and I am trying to teach them all the elements of fiction craft and must demonstrate how writers seamlessly sew these elements into unforgettable tales. The children are very young and this is not an easy task. Young children need hands-on, fun materials for inspiration. I have come up with a plan to implement two learning tools for use in the classroom and at home. Two backpacks containing story books, stamps, and a stuffed animals will be available to the children. They will bring home the backpack and read the stories with their family. A stuffed animal is in the backpack and they will be provided a journal to write about what Callie Cat or Little Ben did while visiting their home. The children will bring their work to school and I will instruct them on editing and re-writing. Many of the children will only use pictorial illustrations which is an important beginning point. Our classroom could use a barn with farm animals to play with and to begin writing and illustrating stories. The barn would spark so many creative thoughts and at the same time, every pre-k should have one. A periscope could be used in the science area and for writing purposes. The children could look through the periscope and draw and write about what they saw. Lastly, blank books are needed for the children to write and illustrate stories in. Children like their work in one book that they can look back on and read. They also like to share their work with others especially family members. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. I hope you decide to fund my project. I believe children should be immersed in learning at an early age. In my classroom we listen to Vivaldi, preform plays, write and listen to wonderful children's literature. The children in my classroom are treated with respect and given license to engage in my learning opportunities. Our children are encouraged to "be nice and work hard", and have lots of fun while learning.
