Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Wellness Center at our continuation school serves a high-need urban population of young people ages 16-19. For many of our students this is a last chance effort at getting a high school diploma.
Our students often spend time in the Wellness Center when they're sick or feeling down or to find support in the form of written resources or a caring, non-judgmental adult. These past few years the Wellness Center has been supporting the school as well in taking a student-centered, asset development approach to our students. We thought to provide some good, resourceful books for students to consult that reflect their real life situations, as well as have some incentives on hand to give away as rewards for positive participation in health events on campus.
Books, markers and iPods may not seem like a lot, but to our students and staff they will be. Books allow students to explore life beyond them as well as become empowered for their own health care. Markers are simple - they allow us to put up in big, colorful letters what events are being put on at school. Whether it's a school blood drive, a summer resource bbq and party, or a young men's or young women's support group; our students get the knowledge and chance to participate in positive activities on campus. iPods are great rewards for students who show motivation and movement towards bettering themselves.
Even from afar, you can help the movement of our students from a place of difficulty to one of true success!
