This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classes are composed of enthusiastic 6th-8th grade students of a Title I middle school in an urban district.

I teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and the goal of my class is to introduce students to the different STEM fields. A typical day in my classroom involves students working on different engineering projects. The various projects are interdisciplinary and strengthen their STEM learning. These include students creating mobile APPs, building and programming robots, dissecting sheep brains, making ice-cream, making plastic out of milk, designing, building, and testing their own creations, such as pasta cars, toy robots, among many other projects.

We are in a Title I school trying to build up our STEM program. The majority of our students qualify for free lunch. My students are smart, creative, and hardworking. They are not afraid of a challenge. My class introduces students to different engineering fields, including mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, biomedical, aerospace engineering, robotics, and computer science.

My Project

Teaching different grade levels in my STEM classes means working on multiple projects simultaneously. My students follow the engineering design process to design and build products. These include creating functional cars out of pasta, building mechanical systems, designing items for 3D printing, making plastic out of milk, among several others. Each of these challenges stimulate their problem-solving and critical thinking skills, in addition to developing their ability to communicate and work in collaboration.

Our upcoming project involves designing and building scale models of educational themed playgrounds incorporating simple machines.

Students will use the engineering design process and combine their knowledge across different subjects to design, build and test their playgrounds. These are all problems involving real-world situations.
