The students in my sixth grade class are trying very hard to be successful but they need help. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many of them are the children of deployed military personnel. I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a transient student population. Over 50% of my class come and go during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language.
My students work at tables, and it is essential that their materials are organized and accessible at a moment's notice so we do not waste precious instructional time.
There is so much for my students to learn. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. They generally do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.
My Project
Thanks to DonorsChoose, our classroom is gradually acquiring the Chromebooks that we need. My students love the HP Chromebooks and we are using them every day for research, reading, GoogleClassroom and GoogleDrive. This means that my students are always looking for a place to plug in and get charged.
Technology is certainly changing the climate of our classroom, but my students need charging stations to help them learn to take responsibility for their Chromebooks.
They will be responsible for placing their team's Chromebook in the proper slot. Also, charging stations will improve the safety factor in our room because my students will not trip over power cords that are exposed all over the floor.
Our classroom Chromebooks get a work-out every day. My students need to have a safe, reliable way to store and charge them.
