Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Living a healthy lifestyle is important and part of this includes being physical fit. Children today spend much of their time sitting inside playing video games and many struggle with childhood obesity. Our students are these children. School is the time where they have the opportunity to get outside, play, and learn skills necessary to participate in games and team sports.
Many of our 5th grade students have never had the opportunity to participate in organized sports in our community.
The majority of are second language learners and have parents that are struggling to make ends meet. They have never had the chance to find out their strengths in their physical fitness and strengthen those skills. Having the opportunity to participate in sports over the next few years in junior high and high school may be what one of these students need to have a successful experience.
My Project
Physical activity is not only essential for healthy growth and development, it’s also important to learning. Research shows that physical activity - whether it’s team sports or playground games - has positive effects on the brain and on school performance. Please help our students not only have physical activity, but also have the opportunity to perform better in school.
Each week our students participate in 100 minutes of physical education instruction.
60 minutes of this is provided by me, the classroom teacher. Using physical education standards, lessons will be developed to incorporate the PE equipment from the project to help students meet the 5th grade PE standards. Using the basketballs, soccer balls, kick balls, footballs, frisbees, and frisbees, together with cones and circuit cards students will learn proper throwing, kicking, hitting and dribbling. Games and drills related to these skills will be introduced and practiced.
Students will then have an opportunity to apply the skills through participation in team games. Team pinnies will be used to help support team play. Team play is important in order for students to learn how to work together and acknowledge differences in physical abilities of students.
