Got Osmo? Hands-on Learning for STEAM in the Library
My students need Osmo to expand the power of iPads in STEAM driven learning. Adding OSMO genius and coding kits to the library will influence teaching and learning schoolwide so students connect hands-on with virtual learning.
"Schools have a responsibility to expose students to things they don't yet know they love." -Gary Stager Student ownership and leadership is a driving force in our daily operations. Students are well aware that their voice is valued and are willing to work to make things happen.
While our students come from varied backgrounds, they acknowledge the need to work hard and display teamwork on a regular basis.
Our elementary school is located in a small rural county. We are a Title I School, with 65% of students receiving free/reduced lunch. Many of our students have never traveled beyond our county lines, and even fewer across state lines. Their exposure to the larger world is very limited. Our school has a strong sense of community that can really only be felt and not described despite our rural, low income status. Students are eager to learn and constantly inspire teachers to take them higher, farther and faster than the day before. The idea of a makerspace has fueled a fire in my students that I have never seen in my 13 years of teaching. They are excited to make, create, innovate and come back the next day to do it again!
My Project
OSMO learning systems take the simplest of technologies (a periscope mirror) and revolutionizes the way students interact with an iPad. By manipulating physical objects that are captured using the iPad camera, students interact with math, language arts, coding, and art software. Osmo makes time with the library iPad more interactive and engaging for students. Engaging kinesthetic (hands-on) students is simple with the Osmo kits. The kits are useful for math, spelling, reading, grammar, and even computer science and coding!
Engaging and inspiring students in a fast-paced world is more important than ever.
Our students are stuck in a world of testing. Every time they turn around, there is another test to take, another test to prepare for. Technology helps engage them in ways they are already accustomed to doing outside the classroom. Osmo helps integrate hands-on with virtual learning. Students work together collaboratively, are motivated to learn, and they don't even realize that they are learning! Osmo kits integrate technology, art, science, and math together in a library common space.
