The students in my pilot math class have been designated as at-risk math students. These students have been with me for a year and a half now and are making great strides in their math development. Many of them are resource students and special education children. Eighty five percent are students of color. We started with a 100% failure rate and as of this term 75% are passing the Algebra strand of the course. My students have not only learned math skills, but also character building, motivation and organization skills. Many of my students come into the program with little home support and success in their every day life. The class has become a family where we support each other and strive to achieve to the best of our ability. I am requesting the "Key to Algebra" math workbooks from Key Curriculum Press. These workbooks will help my students successfully complete the Algebra standards and also pass the California High School Exit Exam. By providing these materials for my students it will not only help them achieve their goals of passing Algebra and graduating from High School, but it will also remind them that they are valued in our society and people do care about them.
