Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach literacy to first graders in a Title I (low-income area, high-need school) school. Most of my students are English-language learners and our first-grade class brings a diverse racial group of students together in a public elementary school.
My students love reading, but sadly, a lot of them do not have books at home. Many lack books that are at their reading level at home, so it does not help their skills and reading ability advance. Books that are too difficult for them and frustrate them and therefore, make reading at home not worth it.
These books are leveled at all of my students' reading levels. I would be able to send books home for each student at their correct level so that they can practice skills and advance themselves in reading. I've included many sets of books so that all students at all levels can succeed. As soon as books arrive, we will start sending books home to every student in both of my classes on a rotating schedule. Students will be able to practice reading strategies that we learn in class during their time at home with these books. These books will be used by every student often and immediately!
Children need to read as much as possible in order to grow in reading. I try to give my students time to read in school, but it is not enough, especially when so many are below grade level in reading. These books will help their reading time at home immensely, please consider donating to this project. Thanks for reading!
